Pinerolo—the children's book cottage
Did you know that there's a centre for children's books at Blackheath in the Blue Mountains near Sydney?
Established by Margaret Hamilton, Pinerolo aims to promote Australian picture books and their creators, educate children and adults about picture books, provide a venue for the exhibition of original artwork and bring people interested in picture books together in an inspiring environment.
Margaret Hamilton has been involved with the world of children's books all her working life as a children's librarian, bookseller, author, editor and publisher. She established Margaret Hamilton Books in 1987, publishing numerous award-winning, internationally successful books and fostering the careers of many Australian authors and illustrators along the way.
Last week Karen Jameyson and I represented The School Magazine team on a visit to Pinerolo. We were given a very illuminating tour by Margaret, who explained the range of services that Pinerolo provides—exhibitions,a research library, a creators in residence program, school visits and workshops.
The next event at Pinerolo is PICTURE BOOKS @ BLACKHEATH with artist and illustrator Dee Huxley and Margaret Hamilton on Saturday 6 April. Details are available on the Pinerolo website.
PS Why the name Pinerolo? Go to their website to find out!
