It was an absolute joy to take part in Bookfeast 2014 along with more than 400 keen young readers and their teachers at Burwood RSL on Thursday 11 September.
Congratulations to the organisers, particularly Mr Michael Fraser, teacher librarian at Haberfield Public School, and his band of helpers. As Mr Fraser says in his welcome message, ‘Through the school years, young and mature readers enjoy the stories that reveal the diversity of our lives.' Bookfeast has celebrated this each year for twenty-five years with thousands of students from NSW public schools.
This year, I was at Lansvale Public School's table. They were delightful lunch companions and they had prepared some really great questions for me about my life as a writer. They are avid readers of The School Magazine and gave me valuable feedback about how they use our magazines in their classrooms. They were also interested to hear about how The School Magazine team works.
We heard from an interesting range of authors: Susanne Gervay, Patricia Bernard, Christopher Cheng and Bruce Whatley, with Marcelle Bernard as our charming MC for the day.
A highlight of every Bookfeast is the raffle. This year The School Magazine donated a bound volume of our 2013 magazines—every child in the room hoped to win this! I had the honour of drawing the first winning ticket and presenting the bound volume to one lucky and very happy bookfeaster.
It was wonderful to share Bookfeast 2014 with some of The School Magazine's authors and illustrators, including Lesley Vamos, Tony Flowers, Pamela Freeman, Anna Fienberg, Jackie Hosking and David Legge. There were many other wonderful creators of Australian chidlren's literature in attendance: Libby Gleeson, Moya Simons, Duncan Ball, Sue Whiting, Toni Brisland and Jesse Blackadder to name a few. What a fabulous feast of words it was!
